Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a well-known aromatic herb. Mint is known to be used as a flavouring in the kitchen, adding its cool aroma to dishes, but less well known is its use as a decoction, presenting numerous medicinal properties. It is also used as an aromatic in cosmetics and toothpastes, a use recorded from the 6th century.
Indicatively mentioned are some medicinal actions against indigestion, nervous disorders, vertigo, headaches, migraines, insomnia, gastritis, diarrhea, cough, colds, sore throat, bad breath, etc. It also shows antispasmodic, tonic and digestive action.
The ancient Greeks used to rub mint on the table before a meal to calm down and enjoy their food, while at the same time they believed that the aroma of mint would whet their appetite. They also used mint leaves to perfume the water of their relaxing bath.
