Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a well-known herb thanks to its miraculous therapeutic value. As is well known, sage is consumed – drunk as a decoction, less well known is its use in cooking, giving a spicy, slightly bitter taste to dishes.
It is considered the herb of longevity and good brain function. Its scientific name salvia comes from the Latin word salvare, which means to save – to heal. Various ancient cultures were aware of the properties of sage and it was used, traditionally, from a meat preservative to a memory and female fertility enhancer and was believed to extend life expectancy to the point of immortality!
Indicatively mentioned are some more actions, as modern studies verify the miraculous pharmaceutical use, attributing to sage anti-inflammatory – antioxidant – antifungal – antimicrobial – analgesic – antipyretic – hemostatic action. It also appears to have a positive effect against neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s), improving memory and cognitive functions.
It is forbidden to use it during pregnancy!
