Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a valuable, beneficial herb with a wealth of therapeutic properties. Its medicinal properties have been known since antiquity and have been used for at least 2,000 years. Traditionally it was used for the production of milk by nursing mothers. In fact, according to popular tradition, the white spots on the ribs of the plant’s leaves were caused by drops of the Virgin Mary’s milk as she nursed Jesus. From this legend, the popular names of the plant are the thorn of the Virgin Mary and the honeysuckle.
Properties
Thistle contains the flavonoid, silymarin, which has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action and contributes to cell renewal and rejuvenation of the body. It is indicated in the treatment and prevention of diseases such as liver disease and hepatotoxicity, gallbladder problems, digestive disorders, etc.
