Melissa officianalis (Melissa officianalis) is also known as the gold of herbs. Its scientific – Latin name and the popular name of the plant came from the special preference of bees for it. Beeswax is widely used as a flavouring in cooking and confectionery but also as an alternative, herbal anti-sulphur in gardening. Its medicinal properties were known since ancient times and it was considered ideal for longevity. A plant directly intertwined with our folk tradition, it is mentioned in the Christmas carols that it is used to “wash the ladies”, indicating its traditional, cosmetic use.

Modern studies indicate some more actions, as a sedative, as it reduces nervousness, heartbeat and stomach spasms, soothes nervous headaches, acts against insomnia, too, elevates mood, soothes herpes and shingles, relieves flu symptoms and toothache, acts against hyperthyroidism and relieves itching and swelling from insect bites.
